The Dehra police have seized a JCB machine and four tipper trucks allegedly involved in illegal mining from the Beas riverbed. The operation took place in the Chamukha area of Kangra district during a late-night special enforcement drive.
Police Operation Against Illegal Mining in Beas Riverbed
The special enforcement drive was carried out during the intervening night of July 20 and 21. A police team constituted by the Superintendent of Police, Dehra, Sandeep Dhawal, conducted the operation under the jurisdiction of the Rakkar police station.
According to The Tribune, the police team found one JCB machine and four tipper trucks allegedly being used for illegal mining during the operation.
Legal Action Taken Against Seized Vehicles
The police challaned all five vehicles under the provisions of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and the Motor Vehicles Act before impounding them.
In a post on social media, the Dehra Police confirmed the action, stating that "1 JCB & 4 tippers were challaned and seized/impounded under the Mining Act," as reported on X (formerly Twitter).

This operation shows that local police are taking illegal mining seriously. Unauthorised extraction from riverbeds like the Beas can cause serious environmental damage, including erosion and water quality issues. In our view, such night-time crackdowns are effective because illegal mining often happens under the cover of darkness. The seizure of heavy machinery like JCB machines and tippers sends a clear message that authorities are watching. However, sustained action — not just one-off operations — is what will truly deter illegal miners in the long run.
