A Mohali court has sentenced Seerat Kaur, 45, to rigorous life imprisonment for the murder of her husband, Ekam Singh Dhillon, in a case that shocked the region in 2017. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 90,000 on her.
How the Murder Happened in the 2017 Suitcase Case
Ekam Singh Dhillon, a businessman and resident of Phase-3B1 in Mohali, was found shot dead on March 19, 2017. His body was packed inside a suitcase and placed in the boot of his BMW car.
The complainant, Darshan Singh Dhillon, who is the victim's brother and a builder, told the court that Ekam had been living separately with his wife of 10 years in Chandigarh along with their two children, aged 11 and 5. The family had moved to Phase-3B1 just 8–10 days before the murder.
Business and Property Motive in the Killing
The complainant further stated that Ekam was involved in a commercial property business. He had purchased property near Gurgaon and Mullanpur worth around Rs 5 crore. The court found that Seerat Kaur had hatched a criminal conspiracy to eliminate her husband.
According to Rozana Spokesman, the court convicted Seerat Kaur under murder charges after an 8-year-long trial. The case was considered high-profile due to the brutal nature of the crime and the manner in which the body was disposed of.
