The All England Lawn Tennis Club has announced it is adding new AI-powered features to Wimbledon's digital platforms through its ongoing partnership with IBM. The updates are designed to improve how fans experience live match coverage.
According to Artificial Intelligence News, the new tools include an upgraded Match Chat assistant and a feature called Key Moments. These will be available through the Wimbledon app and wimbledon.com as first-round matches begin on Monday.
How the New AI Features Work for Fans
The Match Chat assistant allows fans to ask questions about a match in natural language. For example, a user can ask what has happened so far in a match and receive a conversational response based on live data, analysis, and historical performance information.
The Key Moments feature is designed to highlight important parts of a match. Both features will also be accessible through IBM Slamtracker, which is available on the Wimbledon app and wimbledon.com.
Wimbledon's Digital Reach and Long-Term Plans
CIO.inc reported that about 730 million people engaged with Wimbledon last year, generating 18 billion impressions across digital channels. These figures were shared by the AELTC during an IBM media panel.
IBM has stated that its work with Wimbledon is part of a five-year digital transformation project focused on modernising the digital platform. The new AI tools are the latest step in this ongoing effort to enhance the fan experience.
Our Take: A Smart Move for Fan Engagement
In our view, this is a practical and timely update. With hundreds of millions of people following Wimbledon each year, adding AI tools that make live match coverage more interactive and accessible is a smart move. The Key Moments feature, in particular, addresses a real need — fans often miss crucial points in a match, and having AI highlight them automatically saves time and effort. The upgraded Match Chat assistant also makes it easier for casual viewers to follow the action without needing deep tennis knowledge. This is how technology should serve sports fans: by making the experience simpler, not more complicated.
