The Chandigarh Police have solved two hoax bomb threat cases that caused panic in schools and the Punjab Civil Secretariat earlier this year. They arrested Saurav Biswas, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi national who had illegally entered India and was living in West Bengal.

According to The Tribune, Biswas is a tech-savvy freelance web designer and animator. He was arrested on June 2 after the Chandigarh Police obtained a production warrant from Ahmedabad in Gujarat. Biswas was already in custody there at the Cyber Crime police station for a similar offence.

How the hoax bomb threats were sent

Police said that on January 28, threat emails were sent to Tender Heart School and Government Model Senior Secondary Schools in Chandigarh. The emails claimed there were bombs planted on the premises, triggering immediate evacuations and panic among parents and students. Similar threats were also sent to schools in Delhi and the Punjab Civil Secretariat.

According to The Tribune, Biswas has been remanded to police custody by the Sector 17 and Sector 3 police stations in Chandigarh for further questioning. The police are investigating his methods and possible links to other similar threats.

Who is Saurav Biswas?

Biswas is described by police as a tech-savvy individual who worked as a freelance web designer and animator. He had illegally crossed the border from Bangladesh into India and settled in West Bengal. His arrest in Ahmedabad earlier was for a similar hoax bomb threat case.

According to The Tribune, the Chandigarh Police are now questioning him to understand how he operated and whether he acted alone or had help.

Our Take: Hoax threats waste police resources and cause real fear

Hoax bomb threats are not harmless pranks. They force schools to evacuate children, waste police time, and create genuine fear among parents and the public. The arrest of Saurav Biswas shows that law enforcement is taking these crimes seriously and is willing to pursue suspects across state lines. In our view, this case also highlights how technology can be misused by individuals with malicious intent. The fact that Biswas was already in custody for a similar crime suggests a pattern of behaviour that needed to be stopped. We hope the investigation leads to stronger measures to prevent such threats in the future.
