The Special Task Force (STF) of Himachal Pradesh, in collaboration with district police and 93 flying squads from the Health Department, carried out a state-wide special enforcement drive against violations of tobacco control laws. The operation specifically targeted the sale of tobacco products to minors.
Massive Crackdown on Tobacco Sales Near Schools
According to The Hindu, the enforcement drive resulted in the issuance of about 956 challans under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003 and the Prohibition of Sale of Loose Cigarettes and Beedis and Regulation of Retail Trade of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2016. Fines totaling over Rs 5.5 lakh were collected during the operation.
Intensive Inspections and Awareness Campaign
During the state-wide operation, the teams conducted intensive inspections at 2,371 shops across the state. The focus was not only on penalizing violators but also on educating shopkeepers and store owners about the provisions of tobacco control laws. They were encouraged to ensure compliance and were specifically informed about the ban on the sale of tobacco products around educational institutions.
