Punjab Police Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, who was named by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in a $400,000 international extortion plot, has been arrested in Hoshiarpur. Nagra was the former Station House Officer (SHO) of Tanda police station.
FBI Accuses Nagra in $400,000 Extortion Plot
The FBI had named Nagra in connection with an alleged international extortion racket. According to US authorities, Nagra was involved in a plot to extort $400,000 from an Indian-origin family living in the United States. The case is part of a wider investigation into transnational organised crime.
According to The Tribune, Nagra allegedly worked in connivance with the Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gangs to target families based in the United States.
Arrest and Immediate Police Action
The Hoshiarpur police arrested Nagra following the FBI's allegations. Earlier, after reports emerged about his involvement in the FBI probe, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Hoshiarpur had ordered his immediate transfer to the Police Lines.
According to The Hindu, Nagra was the former SHO of Tanda police station before his transfer and subsequent arrest.
Alleged Links to Criminal Gangs
US authorities have alleged that Nagra was part of a scheme that involved threatening an Indian-origin family with false murder charges to extort money. The case highlights the growing reach of organised crime syndicates operating from India to target victims abroad.
According to NDTV, Nagra allegedly helped extort $400,000 from a Los Angeles family by threatening false murder charges.
Our Take: A Serious Case of Transnational Crime
This arrest shows how law enforcement officers can be drawn into serious criminal networks. The fact that a serving police inspector is accused of working with notorious gangs like the Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria syndicates is deeply troubling. It raises serious questions about accountability within the police force. The FBI's involvement indicates that this is not a small local matter but a case with international consequences. The authorities must ensure a thorough investigation to uncover the full extent of the network and bring all those involved to justice.
