Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has firmly rejected allegations of a paper leak in the state, claiming that not a single question paper of a competitive exam has been leaked during his four-and-a-half-year tenure.
CM Mann Addresses Paper Leak Allegations at Zirakpur Event
Speaking at a state-level function in Zirakpur, near Chandigarh, to honour 882 students from government schools who passed the NEET-UG examination, Mann addressed the controversy head-on. According to Hindustan Times, Mann stated that no paper leak has occurred in Punjab since 2022 and that jobs are given on merit.
The CM was indirectly responding to opposition parties, including the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Congress, and BJP, who have alleged a multi-crore scam in the pharmacy officers' recruitment process.
Cheating Incident in Pharmacy Officers' Recruitment Test
Mann acknowledged a recent incident of cheating, or copying, in a pharmacy officers' recruitment test. However, he emphasized the swift action taken by authorities. "A few days ago, an incident of cheating (copying) in exams came to light in a pharmacy officers' recruitment test. However, just 10 minutes after the exam started, the cheaters, violators and those who had copied were caught and are in jail now," Mann said, as reported by Hindustan Times.
This statement is consistent with claims made by Mann on other platforms. In a video shared on YouTube, Mann reiterated that no examination paper leak has taken place in the state under his government's tenure, as reported by YouTube.
Opposition's Allegations of a Multi-Crore Scam
The opposition parties have been vocal in their criticism, alleging a large-scale scam in the pharmacy officers' recruitment. They have called for accountability from the Chief Minister and Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains. However, Mann has consistently denied these allegations, maintaining that his government has ensured a fair and transparent recruitment process.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mann stated, "In the last four to four-and-a-half years, there has been no incident of a paper leak in Punjab," as reported by IANS India.
Our Take: A Clear Stand on Exam Integrity
CM Bhagwant Mann's strong denial of any paper leaks during his tenure is a significant statement, especially given the widespread concerns about exam integrity in other states. By highlighting the swift action taken against cheaters in the pharmacy officers' test, Mann is trying to project an image of a government that is both vigilant and proactive. In our view, this is a crucial message for students and job seekers in Punjab, who need assurance that their hard work will be evaluated fairly. However, the opposition's allegations of a multi-crore scam cannot be ignored, and it remains to be seen if any further investigations will reveal a different picture. For now, Mann's claim sets a clear benchmark for accountability in his administration.
